Vaccination Clinic a Success

On the 27th, the FCHS held a very successful vaccination clinic. I was one of several helpers and we all stayed busy. We gave 112 vaccinations during the 2 hours. We were all pretty excited that so many of our local dogs now have some protection such deadly diseases.  A lot of the 112 dogs that were brought to us were just puppies so I hope that they all come back for their next shot in the series of three.  Most of the people told us that their dogs had never had shots before.  We always encourage pet owners to take their pets for regular veterinarian care but this is at least a start.  Our next clinics will be April 24 and May 22nd.

Free Parvo/Distemper Clinics

Parvo and Distemper are two diseases that are usually fatal to dogs.  Puppies are especially susceptible to those diseases.  In Garden City, hundreds of dogs and puppies die each year because they have not been vaccinated.  In an effort to stop the deaths, the Finney County Humane Society is offering 3 free vaccination clinics for 2010.  You must be a resident of Finney County to be eligible.

The clinics will be March 27th, April 24th, and May 22nd.  They will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in the garage area of the new Animal Shelter at 124 N. Fleming.  All dogs must be on a leash and accompanied by the owner so that a release of liability form can be signed.  There is no limit to the number of dogs that each owner can bring.  Litters of puppies are welcome.  Puppies need a series of vaccinations, 3 to 4 weeks apart, starting at age 6 weeks.

These clinics are NOT meant to replace professional veterinarian care.  These clinics are meant to meet the needs of those that do not get regular health care for their dogs.

Gracie Update

gracies-bonnet2A big hearty “Thank You!” to everyone who donated for Gracie’s surgery. She was operated on at K State on August 18 and received a bone plate graft affixed with 7 screws to her tiny tibia. Over 20 people donated towards her medical care and one especially benevolent couple donated the lion’s share of the up to now cost of $1525.00. She is now in the process of enduring 7 more weeks of cage confinement, only going out on a leash for 5 minutes at a time several times a day for potty breaks. She has had a radical transformation in her personality since her surgery. Before she was very hesitant to let anyone pick her up and if she didn’t know or trust you, would try to bite due to her pain. Since the surgery she loves everyone and is very eager for human contact. She will have to return to K State again in 7 weeks for a postoperative recheck and xrays. If you have not yet donated and still wish to, donations still gratefully accepted. Finney County Humane Society, P. O. Box 2031, Garden City, Ks. 67846, a 501c(3) charitable organization.
