Pet Safety Urged During July Fourth Holiday
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Veterinarians and pet shelter workers in Illinois are urging pet owners to keep watch on their animals as the Fourth of July holiday nears.
Kay Creese is a veterinarian at St. Francis CARE animal shelter in Murphysboro. She says misfired fireworks can hurt pets. She also says pets can consume firework waste left on ground.
Creese advises pet owners to “be aware of where the animals are and how they’re reacting” to fireworks.
Karen Mullins manages the Humane Shelter of Southern Illinois. She says noises scare pets and “they run off.” She says if pets don’t have identification it can be difficult to reunite them with their families.
She says owners should make sure their pets are wearing tags and collars.
